According to the HIPAA law, every payer needs to provide a way for providers to submit their EDI transactions free of charge. There are many ways to do this. You can subscribe to a VAN, set-up an ftp server on your end, set-up an email account for claims submission or use the Web for the file exchange. All electronic Files that contain PMI (Private Medical Information) need to be encrypted. HIPAA Direct Submit uses 128 bit encryption through SSL, similar to credit card transactions on the web. This Method is easy to maintain and easy to use for any trading partner with access to the internet
All you need is a fixed IP address and a computer with Windows and IIS (Microsoft's free web server)
